Corazón Tequila Announces Exclusive Single Barrel Program

Corazón Tequila is combining the time honored traditions of Kentucky bourbon and single estate tequila to offer retailers and consumers the unique opportunity to select customized barrels of tequila, bottled just for them.

This special barrel selection opportunity allows customers to select Corazón tequila aged in bourbon barrels that once held some of the most award-winning bourbons made at Buffalo Trace Distillery and Barton 1792 Distillery. The end product is a truly one-of-a-kind tequila made with hand-harvested blue Weber agave from the Highlands of Jalisco and by the craftswomen and men at Casa San Matias, one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico with more than 130 years of tequila making expertise.

Barrel purchasers first choose a bourbon barrel to age their tequila. Purchasers have the option to select from barrels that have previously held either Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Weller Special Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Blanton’s Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey or 1792 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Barrel purchasers then choose to have their tequila aged to a Reposado or Añejo. Depending on the barrel type and the master distiller’s guidance, the Single Barrel Corazón Reposado will be aged between six to eleven months, and the Single Barrel Corazón Añejo will be aged between 12 and 24 months. The customized tequila is then hand-bottled with a premium neck hanger that features the barrel purchaser’s own logo, along with the specific details of the barrel.

The average barrel yields 35-40 cases of 750ml bottles, packed six to a case. The suggested retail price per bottle of the Single Barrel Reposado is $40 and the Single Barrel Añejo is $45.

Connoisseurs of both bourbon and tequila who wish to take their single barrel tequila selection to the next level can participate in a unique barrel “boomerang.” To participate, enthusiasts who select their own barrel of bourbon at Buffalo Trace or Barton 1792 Distillery can choose to send their empty bourbon barrel to Casa San Matias to age their own hand selected barrel of tequila.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind way to follow your barrel from bourbon to tequila,” Barrel Select Manager, Beau Beckman said. “At the end of the process you’ll end up with unique bottles of bourbon and tequila from the same barrel.”

Corazón Tequilas have received a number of high-profile awards over the years for exceptional taste, including being named World’s Best tequilas at the World Drinks Awards, and most recently receiving the celebrated Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Casa San Matias has gained acclaim for not only producing high-quality tequila, but for its sustainability efforts. The Distillery was the first in the tequila industry to participate in the carbon footprint program promoted by the United Nations to combat global warming, and is one of only a few tequila companies using a biodigester in order to operate environmentally friendly. Casa San Matias is the first tequila company to be certified as a “Great Place to Work,” is recognized as part of “Top Companies” in Mexico, and is also certified for its “Gender equality.”

“Our partnership with Carmen Villarreal and her team at Casa San Matias is a very special one,” Megan Hurtuk, marketing manager for tequila, craft and specialty brands, said. “We’re enjoying their willingness to experiment and create these special experiences and phenomenal tequilas for the Corazón brand.”
